Corona Virus is here and almost everyone can get it. The elderly, young children and those with preexisting medical conditions are vulnerable to this virus. The symptoms are as follows:

  • Mild to severe respiratory illness
  • Fever, cough, shortness of breath
  • Pneumonia in severe infections

Corona Virus can lead to death:
Can a person contract Corona Virus through the eyes? YES!

How is it transmitted?

  • When an infected person coughs or talks, virus droplets from their nose or mouth can go onto another person’s face. That person may inhale the droplets through their mouth or nose or it can even enter your eyes
  • Persons are likely to become infected by touching items that contains the virus and then go on to touch their eyes

How to keep you and your family safe?
There is are a lot of concerns about the Corona virus but once you follow the common sense protocols, you can reduce the risk of you or your family becoming infected. You and your family need to wash your hands a lot often. Practice proper contact lenses hygiene but most of all avoid touching your face, nose and especially your eyes

  1. Avoid wearing contact lenses for awhile
Wearers of contact lenses are more likely to touch their eyes more often that an average person. If you tend to touch your eyes a lot while wearing your contact lenses, you should consider switching to contact lenses glasses, if possible.
  1. Glasses can add a layer of protection
Corrective glasses and even sunglasses can protect your eyes from infected respiratory droplets. But this does not guarantee 100% protection because the virus can still reach your eyes from the exposed sides. If caring for a sick patient, safety googles is your best defense
  1. Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes
Without even realizing we all do it. We touch our face, our nose our eyes all day. It can be a hard habit to stop, but it is necessary in order to lower the risk of infection

If you feel there is an urge to touch your eyes or even to fix your glasses, get in the habit of using a tissue. If you suffer from dry eyes, this can lead to even more rubbing. To reduce this notion, consider using a moisturizing drops as part of your daily routine. If you must touch your eyes even if it is just to administer eye medication, always wash your hands with soap vigorously for 20 seconds ? hand sanitiser.

Practice safe hygiene and social distancing.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers these general guidelines to slow the spread of disease:

    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
    • You should especially wash your hands before eating, after using the restroom, sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose.
    • If you can’t get to a sink, use a hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol.
    • Avoid touching your face — particularly your eyes, nose, and mouth.
    • If you cough or sneeze, cover your face with your elbow or a tissue. If you use a tissue, throw it away promptly. Then go wash your hands.
    • Avoid close contact with sick people. If you think someone has a respiratory infection, it’s safest to stay 6 feet away.
    • Stay home when you are sick.
    • Regularly disinfect commonly touched surfaces and items in your house, such as doorknobs and counter tops
